Spectrum for Piano Duet

Spectrum for Piano DuetABRSM has published its latest book in the acclaimed Spectrum series – renowned for its exciting and innovative collections of specially-commissioned pieces. Spectrum for Piano Duet is a unique collection of contemporary works for piano, four hands. The newly commissioned pieces range in standard from Grade 3 to diploma level and are suitable for pianists of all ages. The book is divided into three sections - seven pieces with easy Primo and Secondo parts, seven pieces with harder Primo and Secondo parts and the remainder with harder Primo and Easier Secondo part for teacher-student and mixed level pairs. Alongside the established composers represented, such as Michael Finnissy and Arvo Pärt, are six young composers, who have each contributed a variation on Howard Skempton’s theme, ‘Primary Colours’. The highly successful Spectrum series was established by ABRSM and Thalia Myers in 1996, and now includes volumes for piano, violin, cello, clarinet and string quartet. The aim of the series remains unchanged: to commission some of the finest composers to write pieces of modest length and difficulty, while preserving the essential characteristics of their compositional style. ABRSM will host a launch event on Saturday 27 October in collaboration with the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music, comprising composer workshops, a full performance of pieces in the book and a reception. The launch will be attended by 14 of the composers, as well as students and teachers from the JDRCM.
